The Snake Eats Its Tail

No Affordable housing in California? Government action is required! Open spaces, vacant land in California? They must be protected from development!

There is of course, no connection between these two statements, right?
Well, except the law of supply and demand, as noted by Thomas Sowell.

Study Time

I'm doing the Chartered Financial Planner Exam on saturday, and have taken yesterday, today and the next two days off to study for it. I'm trying for ten hours a day of study. (Didn't quite get there yesterday, today's another day.) I'm immensely looking forward to having this thing done so I can enjoy the summer whenever it decides to arrive.

In the meantime, I can apply my knowlege to current events. Should Paul Martin pursue a wrongful dismissal action against Jean (Not that it will ever happen ) and succeed, he would be entitled to;

*Any award for mental cruelty and suffering will be tax free.
*Allowed to transfer amounts of the award into his RRSP, sheltering the funds from tax. $2000 for each year of service before 1996, so $6000. (Not that Martin's pension is so rich that it eliminates all RRSP room anyway through the Pension Adjustment.)
*Legal fees are deductible against the settlement amount

On Liberal Civil War

It would almost be kinda fun to buy a membership to the Liberal party right now, just to enjoy the internecine warfare. Just think, only another eight months of this to go!

The only word for what I'm feeling for the Liberals right now is
schadenfreude.

Shfting Climate

The New York Times says that the
Bush Administration is going to do an aboutface on Global Warming and proclaim that it does believe in Global Warming. Releases on the Bush Administration's belief in the Easter Bunny and Santa Claus are also forthcoming.

Ironically, if Bush does come out in favour of the Kyoto agenda, it will render the whole issue of Global warming academic, because Hell just froze over.

(via The Corner)

Oh, and if you haven't already, be sure to check out Mr. DenBeste's analysis of the Kyoto accord. Why isn't this man sydnicated already? This analysis belongs on the comment pages of the newspapers of record, not just the web. Of particular note is the analysis of why even if Bush were to declare his intent to go ahead with Kyoto, it's still a dead letter.

I plan to forward the analysis to my Scientific American loving friend, and enjoy the resulting debate. Always fun.

Which do Leftists Love More? The Poor or Taxes?

An
Arkansas ballot initiative would eliminate all taxes on food and medicine in the state. Do you think leftists are in favour of eliminating taxes in a fashion that would benefit the poor more than anyone else? You might be suprised.

Surprise, Surprise

A Palestinian Military tribunal has ordered the
release of the ringleader of Tourism Minister Rehavam Ze'evi's assassination.

That took what? Three weeks? Four perhaps, since he was put under British and American custody. Now the interesting thing is if the Gaolers release him. Watch for the "Free Sadat" posters popping up on SFSU soon.

Sunday, June 02, 2002:

"It is with sadness I confirm you are leaving the cabinet," Chretien said in a letter to Martin, which was distributed to the media at a swearing-in ceremony at Rideau Hall.

"But unfortunately matters unrelated to governing have gotten in the way of our working together on government policy."

"As such, we both understand with real regret that it is in the best interest of the government and the country that you step down from cabinet."

Chretien has fired Martin.

My Canadian Dollar Doomwatch resumes tomorrow.

Terror Petition

Via
HonestReporting.com comes a petition to be presented to media outlets who call terrorists "militants".

HonestReporting announces the launch of TerrorPetition.com, a major petition drive calling on newspapers and broadcast media to label Palestinian suicide bombers as "terrorists."

News agencies like MSNBC.com, BBC and Reuters have come under criticism for refusing to refer to Palestinian suicide bombers as "terrorists." Instead, they use the terms "militants," "activists," or even "freedom fighters."

TerrorPetition.com is collecting 100,000 signatures, at which point we will present the petition to editors and executives of hundreds of media outlets worldwide.

Please take a moment to sign the petition. I note that they intend to forward a copy to Al-Star once they reach their 100,000 signatures.
